1960 Double Door

Postby vwfool » Fri Jan 06, 2017 7:58 pm

I figured I would start a thread for this other project of mine. Nothing has been getting done to the stretched bus as I wait for Gerson to hopefully finish sending me my order. 8-[

Image

So I pulled this out of my enclosed trailer where it has been sitting for 4 years. I made it a mobile storage unit to hold all my extra doors and other misc big bulky parts. Kind of out of sight out of mind. I forgot how much crap I had jammed inside it.

Image

I pulled the small nut transmission thinking this one was just thrown in the bus as it was missing the cradle mount. Turns out after checking the numbers it is the original trans to the bus, still had the original VW part# nose mount, shift coupler etc. I am not surprised considering how dry this bus is. I know it hasn't been registered since 1973 according to DMV records.

Anyhow, I am hoping to have the trans rebuilt while I go thru the front end stuff and start on brakes. My big question is how do I protect the undercarriage of the bus from rust being I live in the rainforest now. The belly pans are nice and solid, only rust is the outer rockers under the cargo doors. The whole underside has surface rust on it. Is there something I should coat the bottom with to keep it from turning into cancer rust. Picture of how it looks.

Any suggestions are greatly welcomed. Figure this is the time to do it while I have all the suspension out of it.

Yes, love panels, bonus on the double door! Are you using that rear hatch on the roof to make your own super sub hatch? Wink

Hahahahahaha. No. I have three other butchered buses (the stretched bus and the two minis). I am at my quota for freaks. Keeping this stock.

Nice, can't ever go wrong with stock. I assume stock height as well? Big meats on it?

I am wanting to build it like I did my old 13 window. Mild lift (one notch down on the spring plates and cut and turned the beam), super swampers, 3.44 big nut built to the hilt trans, mild 1776cc engine (had it laying around). Drove great. Sold it due to moving up here. ](*,) ](*,)

This would be my goal anyhow.

Yesterday I took the day off from work and took the family to Portland for my wife's birthday (her favorite restaurant is there). Didn't get home until 1130 last night. Got work today but after I get off this bus and I have a date. Time to get rolling on this.

Front end is up in the air. The grease from the front drums apparently got really hot while the bus sat in my enclosed trailer for 3 of the past 4 years in blazing heat of Arizona. Drums were a bitch to get off with gooey wheel bearing grease between the drums and shoes. No wonder this thing was kicking my ass trying to get it in the garage.

Started removing crap from underneath. Pulled the clutch cable, master cylinder, soaked the shift rod and other things with penetrating oil in preparation for tomorrow nights session.

I got lucky and found a good deal on line for the same Super Swampers I used on my old 13 window. Set of 5 delivered to my door $600. So I had no choice but to buy them. \:D/ \:D/ \:D/

Now I need to dig out some rims for them and get them blasted.
