71 Baywindow bus with a Subaru

Postby andym » Sun May 15, 2016 10:55 am

Originally I wasn't going to post this build, but it seems like a lot of guys are interested in Subi swaps. Post up, come out of the closet!!
It's a 71 Baywindow, runner and driver. But the guy that owns it doesnt want to dick around with Vw engines anymore. So he drove it to my place a few weeks ago, and I've been working on it here and there.

First order of business is to build a rear engine hanger. Might build some spares for the future.

Basic plan:
2.2 single overhead cam Subaru
Kennedy adapter plate
Microsquirt brains/wiring

I don't have a ton of pictures, if interest is high I'll keep posting tech info, otherwise you'll have to guess at the magic that happens.

Old motor, new motor

This bus is why the square got kicked down the list to work on. Kinda sounds like a few other buses and a type 3 might be jumping in line too.

JJ can have L31 army. I'll take the Subi army, what if the 2 army's combined!! :-# :-#

Rear engine hanger is my first priority to get done. Can't really do shit with the motor flopping around. Then exhaust, simlar to my other Subi exhaust, then radiator and wiring.

This one shouldn't take long, pretty easy set up.

I'd make 2 or 3 of whatever you're fabricating. Shouldnt be too hard to sell it. Specially to the bay peeps.
I'd be in for a hanger and maybe an exhaust, if I could afford it right now, "just in case" Smile

I can already tell you guys the exhaust will cost close to $600. My cost, muffler $150, stock header part that I use $150, flanges $8, stainless tubing $50, stainless bends those are $12 each I think, I think the last one I did I was just over $400. Then add shipping into that for you guys, shipping costs are really expensive now. ($80?) then a little love for my time..

I'm sure anyone of you can make one for a few hundred less, but this is how I do mine and it works.

The rear engine hanger is kinda the same deal. I'm good with making more, but everyone else will have to use a 2.2, single over head and the same exhaust. There are a million factors in this equation, which is why nobody makes a kit I'd guess. I can do it all, and do it time and time again, if you want my parts to help you, you'll have to use "Andys kit" ---all of my parts as a unit.
