I've seen quite a few cut, narrowed, sleeved, and welded. An old friend/roommate of mine had one 15 years ago. It seemed to work but I'm sure they do not behave 100% as they were designed to.

I would try a narrowed stock bar first. With the 5" shorter spring packs you are already increasing stiffness, a 3/4" bar will make it rock solid. A stock bar will allow the suspension to move but still keep the front end from rolling around.

I was thinking about that one too!

Found a solution.

Called and talked to Brian at Sway-A-Way. I have chatted with him a handful of times before. They make sway bars for VW's, but their website is down and does not really have information of what they make for VW's currently.

Well they make runs of sway bars every 4-5 months. I asked Brian if they could make a narrowed one and he said, "Sure....just a matter of changing a few settings on the bender as we make 'em. The bends stay the same, just making the middle length different. If you need it next week it will probably cost you $3-400, but if you're willing to wait about 5-6 weeks and buy it when we are making the next run.....probably run you $125-150."

Done. Screw cutting/sleeving/fucking up a sway bar. I will just wait until its ready.

And just for reference, if anyone out there wants to buy a narrowed VW sway bar over 2".......you can call and talk to Brian.

That's good to know! I wonder if they would make a smaller diameter bar. I am not a fan of the 3/4" bar at all.

No clue. Might be worth calling and asking. Tell him I sent you.

I know they make 3/4" and 7/8", but you might find they make different sizes. Never hurts to ask.

My bad, they are on the east coast. If you look in the faq section on their page they make custom sway bars.

Yeah, looks like they are in South Carolina. No worries. I will still give em a ring.

On another note, this question goes out to anyone and everyone. Engine tarboards. You guys install them on all of your cars? Was changing the engine seals yesterday and my back tarboard is crumbling so I yanked it out and cleaned the firewall of all the old glue residue.

I know it quiets down the engine noise, but what difference does it make compared to if you were just to put a dynamat type deadener on the inside under the carpet?

Would love to hear the KCW assembly crews input on the matter.

Thanks y'all!

I love how a painted firewall looks but that insulation (on both sides) really helps quiet things down. The last car I built I only insulated the cabin side (dynomat and jute) and it's still loud as hell. Could be the IDA's though! Anyway, next time I get the chance I'm going to insulate the engine side, upholstered in a Porsche 356 fashion.

Thanks for the input!

I will get one ordered now. I know there are two different tarboards you are seeing these days. The OG style from Wolfsburg West (which looks like what KCW is using on builds) and then there is the offering that West Coast Metric is using with is more of a checkered design.

Not gonna lie.....I think the checkered look actually looks kinda rad behind a motor. Doesnt come close to the Porsche style upholstered backing though.
