Thanks Pat for the update!

The pictures you have posted are probably the best ones i have seen so far of her at the present status. I saw you working on the dirty cam at work today - and had to calculate the time difference to realize it was really late in your end!

This is an ebay purchase [-o< i made a few months back, so what is hiding behind that yellow paint will be just as much a surprise for me as the rest of you.

I will give you guys an update later on what i know about the history of the car, but it is getting late here also (soon 2 AM ) - and i just got home from our garage, "Krankenhaus" where I have have been working with my VW-friends on a 70 T1 Sparkafer.

One of the things i have learned (after i pressed the buy-button on ebay) is that one of the former owners pulled the Porsche our of a field in Alabama where it had sat for 23 years. I will post some older pictures for you tomorrow!

Kinda scary to think about this car sitting in a field for 20+ years in the rust belt of the south. I know the KCW crew will handle any surprises that may lay under the yellow.

What are the plans for the car? Figured I would ask before Rusty.

No big plans really, open for suggestions. Mostly stock - perhaps with a "light" outlaw theme with some KCW touches to it.

It originally used to be black with a red interior - which i believe is a great combination.

As i mentioned, i got a friendly email from a former owner. He wrote me the following:

Hi Erik,
SO sorry it has taken me this long to get back with you, I have been extremely busy lately with both opening our second wine shop and working my day job! Crazy, great busy times! I think it is fantastic that you are a type 1 guy as well as myself. It was very hard to part with the 356, but I am glad someone got it that can appreciate it. I pulled the car out of a field in Alabama where it had sat for 23 years. Prior to that, I don't have any additional information. There was no title, just a bill of sale. I trade my 56 oval window along with cash to make the deal happen. My friend Andy Ball and I are the ones that were taking the paint off of the car in front of my friends auto body shop. It took me about 4 years to get it to the point it was at when I sold it to Eric, between working and family. If you have any other questions, or if I can help in any way, please feel free to call or e-mail me.

Take care,
Paul Smith

This is probably how it looked when he found it!

Paul started a wine bar - and needed to fund his venture. The ebay seller told me:
I bought the car from Paul Smith who lived in Lexington, Ohio. He purchased the car from someone in Mansfield, Ohio and then started the restoration at the Bucket Seat auto shop in Lexington, Ohio. The shop is near a fairly famous racetrack in Ohio called Mid-America. Paul was a VW guy and he wanted a Porsche so he swapped in the Type I engine and had the welding and body work done at the Bucket Seat. Paul decided to start a wine bar, and needed money to invest in the business so he sold the car to me a few years ago.

Hello Erik,

Have you sent off for the COA yet?

Black/Red is a very desirable combo, especially if it came from the factory that way.

Did you just say that you wanted to paint it "I hate myself black"?
