Postby john jones » Mon May 09, 2011 9:19 am

New project.. 2 fold ragtop.. Tom has talked alot about Alans ragtop.. so I think this one will be somewhat similar.... Not sure on all the specifics yet from Tom.. but maybe he will fill us in... [-o< I talk to so many people about so many different projects.. Sometimes.. it's tough for me to remember ever little detail about every single one.. :-$

We got right on it this morning.. body off and on dolly.. going to start the stripping...

I'll make a gallery in a few..

Hmm, those front fenders and the deck lid would look right at home on my 57.

Hi everyone. First time to the forum and am excited to work with the KCW gang on this project. A little history may be worthy here........ been a Type 1 owner on&off since getting my drivers license. I almost had KCW build me a bug a few years back but I chickened-out and ended up buying a 58 rag....big mistake...buying cars on ebay is crazy.

I resold my 58 last year and had John hook me up with this 56 rag from OvalTeen out of AZ. Thanks, OvalTeen.

Now I'm set. Can't wait to hear the ideas and thoughts on this build.

Frickin'awesome to finally see your own bug on the cams getting some love after seeing other people's bugs all these years.

Yeah! What are we going to do to this rig? Derrick blasted it all afternoon...back to virgin metal, bare canvas.

Big ridiculous 2332cc with 48 IDA webers?

I have been thinking about this for a while. Now that we are here, I am second guessing everything. I welcome all input on this build. This is an open canvas and I am not locked down on anything. Here are a couple thoughts:

Stroked - All new powertrain
Vintage exterior and interior....but perhaps follow vintage 356 options since my 56 vw color choices may be too popular these days (strato silver, polar silver, etc)
Narrowed and dropped KCW stance (Hugo's looks about right)
Full KCW rebuild
4 wheel discs
Wheels - Have no Clue......Franz? Whatya got in mind?
Chrome a beam lately?
Keep as much OG parts as necessary...let me know what's missing so I can start searching, if needed.
My kids would kill me if I didn't put in XM/Ipod technology in this
Gauge cluster (oil temp, pressure, tach)

Like I said, I am a rookie at this. I welcome any ideas from everyone.

Anyone have any pop-outs for sale?

Chrome beam? Nah, we've never done that. Chrome work is ridilulously expensive...you could spend $3K easily on the beam/arms/spindles. But you're not going to stop there, you'll want to do all kinds of stuff once you start.

If you're open on wheels, we should get something killer. Now is the time to decide on wheels.

If you are open for suggestions, I'd go for the zero camber look in the rear (raise the transmission).

This is the KCW look that I like the best....Kevin's oval. But I'd change this one up just a little so that it is not an exact copy.

I would'nt worry about pop-outs....You have a ragtop.

But if you want them. EIS has nice repops that are ready to bolt in.
