Went to California last year. Got some miles. Something happened. Engine locked. Most likely oil starvation. I will see tomorrow when I take the bottom end apart.

No check valve. The coolers are pretty low. Below the bumper. I didn't think drain-back would be an issue.

Hate the motor troubles for the new owner, but love seeing this thread pop back up. You guys crushed this build.

IMO.... this is probably a technicality of those dual coolers and 30 feet of line required to get the oil to the front and back to the back... start up, if not done correctly.. could be a bitch on this motors bearings.. #-o #-o #-o #-o #-o #-o #-o #-o #-o

The carnage. The rear main was the one that locked. Spun the pin in the case. Not terrible. May be able to save the case.

The oil pump had some deep scratches too. Like someting went through it?

One lifter shelled out. The other 7 looked great. The cam looked and measure good. But I don't know about re-using it.
Image

It had a Kennedy clutch. The early throw-out bearing conversion piece came apart.

Boxed and ready to go the the machine shop. AKA Painter's Grinding.

Decided to spend my 4th working. Kind of boring I know. Planning to grill and light fireworks this evening. Next year will be better I promise.

We got the long block back from Painter's for this ghia. They had to do a little machine work on the case. The rear main bearing locked to the crank.

I started putting it back together today. Making small changes.

The clutch was blown-up too.

Ditching the Jaycee pressure relief oil system for strait simple full-flow with a check valve. Maybe a thermostat would be a good idea too? To shorten the oil system loop when its cold. But I worry about it sticking closed, not allowing the oil to the coolers. That could cause a catastrophic failure. Trade offs. :-k
Image

The rear main bearing. The case was damaged. Painter's was able to machine it for a stepped pin.
