I hope you are planning to drive this to the utah vw classic in September. Park that next to JJ and have some fun!

Thanks Franz. I’ll check the line to make sure it’s open. Does it pull from left to right then?

The carb was just rebuilt and I haven’t really adjusted it so maybe that could be it too. I’ll check it out.

I really appreciate all the help you guys constantly give me by answering my dumb questions.

I got the heat risers cleared out but they still aren’t working correctly. The intake below the carb is getting iced over and of course it doesn’t run right after that happens. So I’m wondering if the muffler I bought isn’t working correctly.

I don’t recall where I bought it or the brand. I’ve seen a few places selling Dansk brand.

What brand do you guys recommend?

Need to see pictures and maybe videos of Zack with his new ride. I loved this rapid fire build. So awesome!

This is such an awesome project. To be honest it gives me hope that a nice build, daily driver can be built without a full blown restoration. It’s amazing.

    I’m jealous Zack

Thanks for the fast replies! I did adjust the valves prior to firing up the engine so I think they are ok. I did not check the torque on the heads or the compression. Out of curiosity Franz – what is the labor rate for mechanical work? It would probably be a lot better overall for me to just bring this to you and have you fix all the weird performance  issues. I expected stuff like this since the car sat for so long before I got it. I just wish I had the knowledge to make it work right.

Yeah JDawg I have done the ask forgiveness thing before. In fact when I got this bug I had to pull the trigger super fast because the guy was waffling on selling it to me. So…on my daughter’s birthday I had to slip out with a buddy and a car hauler and then come back. She was a little bit unhappy with me. 🙂 But I didn’t want to miss out on getting the car.

I got the carb back on Friday from Tim @ Volkzbitz. He did an outstanding job on rebuilding the carb:

I installed in on Saturday and it did make quite a difference. The bug started up easily after getting fuel to the carb and then seemed to run much smoother. However, this is not the only issue. I was able to drive the car but it really had no decent power or acceleration. When I rev the engine up it feels like it is bogging out at the top. I kind of figured something else would be an issue as I mentioned above so now I think I need to look at the points and timing. I had checked the points previously as I also mentioned above but I haven’t messed with the timing. A friend suggested getting an electronic points kit to put in the distributor. I have no idea if that is a good idea or not. What do you guys think? Bear in mind this is a stock 40hp 6volt car.

I guess I  need to get my towbar out and haul this think over to KCW. I just need to convince my wife that it is absolutely necessary. 🙂

Trust me John I plan to get this car to you. I’ve followed your site for around 10 years or so I believe. I’ve shown a lot of people the current and completed build galleries over the years. After finally meeting you and Gretchen at the salt lake show I was even more anxious to get this car in your shop. You guys were so down to earth and fun to talk to ! My son loved hanging with the shop dogs And told me after that it was his favorite part of being there. I too am anxious to become part of the kcw family. ?

Once I get my carb back I’ll get a trip to kcw planned.

That carb looks amazing!  I went ahead and sent it to Tim @ Volksbiz today. Either way I think it needed a good once-over. The ceramic choke has a decent crack with a piece missing from the side. I don’t think I cleaned all the channels or lines in the carb as well as I needed to. This thing sat from 1984 until 2014 when I bought it. The carb had a lot of dried up crap in it.

I am sure you are right Franz and it could very well be other issues as well. I don’t know if the vacuum advance distributor is working correctly either. I checked the points (gap was right and they didn’t seem too worn or pitted). I just thought maybe getting the carb done correctly would at least eliminate that as the problem. Then after getting it back I will see where I am. I wish I was closer to KCW I would love to be a Parkway Project. Then I know it would be dialed in and running right. 🙂 For now I will just have to do my best to play mechanic and look for help from more knowledgeable people such as the fine folks on these forums.  I am going to get this thing at least running so I can start driving it. I will post pictures once I get the carb back from Volksbiz.

Thanks for the help you guys. I messed with it again today, but no such luck. The throttle shaft doesn’t seem loose but I could be mistaken. I may just send it to that guy you suggested and get it rebuilt.

Hey Zack – I have a question for you. First however, just wanted to say the site keeps getting better and better. All the little tweaks are really improving the look and feel. Just wanted to add my comments to many others that you are doing a great job!

So my question was about adding an additional main category to the forums home page. Currently you’ve got Bullshit, Camping & Show, Completed Projects, Current Projects and the upcoming store. Would it be worthwhile to add “Tech Questions” under that where people can post individual threads with questions? If not no big deal. I have seen a few random individual threads with questions and thought maybe having a main repository for them would be helpful.  Just a thought.

Anyway keep up the great work!

    Bob

PS I gave your parents my contact info at the show and told them you can reach out to me for any tech questions you are frustrated with. I am happy to help however I can. 🙂
