do you guys use penn all the time or just for break in? if so what weight?
Penn Grade all day everyday.
They make strait 30 “break-in” that I flush out immediately after running the first 15 mins. They say its acidic.
10w40 frost-thaw
20w50 all summer/spring/fallRight now I’d debating whether to order more 10w40 because I know all the cars I put it in are going to run this summer.
^^^That all sounds good to me. Those are same weights I’ve been running in the current motor. I’ve never had any luck finding Penn in local stores (usually just Lucas for high zinc oils) but can easily pick it up on Amazon or Summit.
<p style=”text-align: center;”>Pete the car looks awesome you’ve defiantly givin it the love it deserves, been watching your build and can’t wait to see how this motor performes, any ideas on hp output when done?? And are you gonna dyno it??</p>
looking awesomeI was told to run 10/30 in my street cars and the 20/50 in my race engines. I just bought a case of the 10/30 from my supplier. Pete I have a distributor that has it semi locally. Let me know when you need more.

www.germanaire.comThanks Johnny. I tried for a while to convince myself to build a 1914 or 2276 dressed up vintage and just couldn’t do it. I like these old 36’ers.
Shin Watanabe had his 1397 build in HotVW’s a few years ago (I’ll see if I can post the articles here – EDIT, the PDF’s won’t post). His dyno’d at 69.5 hp with the Speedwell 1.25 rockers, and around 65 hp with stock 1:1 rockers (I’m told he runs stock now b/c the Speedwells were noisy). Our motors are nearly identical except I’ve gone with larger 35mm intake/33mm exhaust (the WW kit is 32/30 as sold I believe?) and slightly higher compression. I currently have 1:1 rockers but am considering the AA Performance 1.15 slight ratio rockers for a little more kick. Shin uses the Speedwell intakes and Weber 40 IDF’s, and the WW 69.5 crank and .345 lift cam, just like mine (my carbs will be DRLA’s or Solex P11’s). I’m hoping mine will make 70+ hp. No plans to dyno since Shin’s #’s are available but I could be persuaded.

Interesting….I’m surprised with your stroker motors, and the heat here during the summer, that you stick with the 10/30 year around. Your rides have a track record of being pretty damn reliable, so I guess it’s hard to argue against it.
Are you getting Penn locally, or Lucas (or something else)?

www.germanaire.comYou guys will get the fun part after Franz does his magic.. 😎

Magic haha. More like rigging a bunch of junk together.
Joe Ruiz stuff is always the nicest. I’m excited to see the engine. Is this the one he calls “1500cc hurricane”?

I’m not sure “rigging” is word most would use to describe your attention to the details. 🙂
Mine is a 1400 (80×69.5) with the AA Performance P/C and WW counter weighted crank. His 1500 option (80×74) ISN’T inexpensive since he uses OG Porsche cranks, OG rods and P/C’s designed for the early 2 piece Pre-A engines. He won’t use anything less (I asked) to build that one, and he had a bunch of reasons for sticking to that related to the required machining, fit and longevity of the pieces involved in that option.
